Four Years Of Showing Up for Students
Brown’s Shoe Fit Fairfield and The Bridge Church
Some partnerships start with a big idea. This one started with a single classroom.
Five years ago, a conversation between Brown’s Shoe Fit Fairfield and The Bridge Church sparked something neither side could have fully anticipated. What began as a simple question — could we get shoes for a few kids? — has grown into one of the most meaningful community programs in southeast Iowa.
This year marked Brown’s Shoe Fit Fairfield’s fourth year partnering with The Bridge Church, and the numbers tell part of the story: 2552Â pairs of new athletic shoes, distributed to students across the region over the last four years. But the numbers don’t tell the whole thing.
How It Works
The Bridge Church operates across four campuses — Ottumwa, Oskaloosa, Centerville, and Fairfield — and each year, those campuses work together to coordinate one of the most logistically impressive community efforts in the area. Church volunteers visit classrooms directly, measure students for shoes, and manage the entire coordination process on the community side. Brown’s handles the ordering, organization, and distribution of every pair.
The partnership works because everyone does what they do best. The church brings the relationships and the reach. Brown’s brings the expertise and the inventory. Together, they make sure the shoes actually get to the kids who need them.
Brands like Kizik and Under Armour have played a meaningful role in making the program possible, providing significant support through discounts that stretch every dollar further and allow more students to be served each year.
What Makes This Program Different
One of the things that sets this program apart is its philosophy: it is not needs-based. Every child in the designated grade receives a new pair of shoes — no application, no qualification, no stigma. Every student.
And yet, every year, the team hears the same kinds of stories. Students whose shoes are worn through. Families who have been meaning to get to the store but haven’t been able to make it work. Kids who are getting by in footwear that isn’t doing what footwear is supposed to do.
The program meets those students where they are — quietly, without making them stand apart from their classmates. That’s what makes it special.
“Seeing the excitement on their faces when they receive their shoes is something I’ll never forget. It truly feels like watching kids open presents on Christmas morning. We participate in this program because we believe in giving back to the communities that support us. Seeing the impact on these students and their families reminds us that even something as simple as a new pair of shoes can make a meaningful difference.”
