Not a Franchise. Something Better.

When most people think about owning a retail business, they think franchises — big buy-ins, rigid rules, slim margins. Brown’s Shoe Fit Company operates differently. As an individually owned group of 73 locations across the country, Brown’s has built a registered apprenticeship program that gives the right people everything they need to become a successful business owner, without the typical barriers to entry.

“We look for people who want to operate a business but don’t really know how they’re going to get the capital or where they’d even come up with the inventory. We provide all of that, but they have to think long-term.”

— Kelsi Bouray, Director of Training/Management Development

The Ideal Candidate

Doesn’t Need a Degree.

They Need Drive.

Brown’s isn’t looking for a resume. They’re looking for a person — someone with a specific mindset that makes them capable of building and sustaining a business. Here are the traits Kelsi screens for in every candidate:

Trait What It Means
Long-Term Thinking You’re not here for a paycheck. You’re building something that compounds over time.
Desire for Autonomy You want to run your own ship and be fully accountable for where it goes.
Inner Drive Self-determination that’s intrinsic — not something that needs to be lit from the outside.
Competitive Spirit Competing with yourself and your peers drives goals and grows the business.
Organization You’ll be your own marketer, buyer, accountant, and manager. Systems matter.
Ready to Crush the Day Waking up ready to go, every single day, is non-negotiable.

From Application to Ownership

Step by Step

The program is intentionally rigorous. Brown’s only wants people who are truly ready, so the path is structured, supported, and layered with real accountability.

Step What Happens
1. Apply Online or Visit a Local Store Head to brownsshoefitco.com to explore open opportunities and submit your application, or walk into your nearest location to start the conversation in person.
2. In-Depth Interview Process This is an elite program. Brown’s screens carefully for the traits and skills that predict real success. Expect multiple conversations and honest evaluation.
3. Orientation at Corporate HQ The final step before the program begins. You’ll meet the corporate team, get a feel for the culture, and both sides confirm it’s a mutual fit.
4. Apprenticeship (1 to 3 Years) On-the-job training across 2 or more store locations, paired with relevant curriculum covering real business ownership skills including buying, operations, team leadership, and more.
5. Store Ownership Development Program (SODP) When you get the call to run a store, you’re not handed the keys and wished luck. A phased, mentor-guided transition ensures you’re ready to hold the reins with confidence.
6. You’re an Owner Build your own team, run your store your way, and tap into the ongoing support of the Brown’s corporate network — your biggest behind-the-scenes resource.

Three Income Streams.

And a Retirement You Can Actually Enjoy.

Brown’s has been growing its financial success over 115 years, and that growth has accelerated in the last decade. Young managers today are seeing incomes that surprise people who assumed a “shoe store” career had a ceiling.

“The sky’s the limit for income earning potential. What drives the dollar signs is your ability to connect with people.”

— Kelsi Bouray, Director of Training/Management Development

Income Stream What It Looks Like
1. Active Income Earned while operating your store day-to-day.
2. Additional Income Streams Built through your years of ownership as the business grows.
3. Passive Retirement Income With the ability to retire as early as age 60 — on a timeline most people only dream about.

Most people have to wait until 65 or 70 to retire. Brown’s owners who build their businesses with intention are on a different timeline — one where you enjoy the fruits of your work while you’re working, and still have something waiting for you when you’re done.

It’s Never the Wrong Time to Start.

Brown’s sees candidates from all walks of life — 18-year-olds fresh out of high school who want to skip the college debt, 20-somethings who tried college and realized it wasn’t the path, and mid-career professionals in their 30s and 40s who never knew this kind of opportunity existed. The common thread isn’t age. It’s ambition.

“We meet people halfway through their careers who want to change and didn’t ever know this opportunity existed, and we’re able to provide that for them.”

— Kelsi Bouray, Director of Training/Management Development
